This concert programme brings together two masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire which, despite the time that separates them, share the same remarkable quality: the ability to lead us into the most intimate corners of the human soul.
Mozart’s String Quintet in G minor, K. 516, written in 1787, is one of the most admired chamber works in his catalogue. Its minor key gives it an intense and dramatic character, while the presence of two violas adds a distinctive richness of tone and warmth. The result is a work of profound emotional beauty, regarded as one of the milestones of Mozart’s mature output.
More than a century later, Johannes Brahms composed his Quintet in B minor, Op. 115, one of the major works of his final creative period. Originally conceived for clarinet and string quartet, Brahms himself authorised an alternative version for viola, less frequently performed and endowed with an especially evocative sonority. With its deep lyricism, dark colours and subtle melancholy, this score represents one of the most refined and moving expressions of German Post-Romanticism. The programme will also feature a world premiere by the young composer Zach Cubillas.
Eden Quintet is a chamber ensemble led by Rivka Golani, one of the most renowned and influential violists of the contemporary music scene. Born in Israel and based in London, Golani combines her international performing career with an intense commitment to teaching. She is a professor at Trinity Laban College of Music and Dance, where she attracts students from around the world thanks to her demanding, creative and deeply musical approach.
